About JAN: Painting What Words Cannot Say
People often ask me where my paintings begin.
The truth is, they rarely begin with an image. They begin with a feeling.
Sometimes it's a memory that refuses to fade. Sometimes it's a question I can't answer. Other times it's a moment so ordinary that most people would walk past it without a second thought. Those are the moments that stay with me, and eventually they find their way onto canvas.
I don't paint to recreate the world as it is. I paint to express what it feels like to live in it.
Expressionism has always felt like the most honest language for me. Life isn't neat and our emotions aren't either. They overlap, collide, fade and return when we least expect them. That's why my brushstrokes are bold, my colours are unapologetic and my paintings are layered with movement. I want every mark to carry emotion, not just decoration.
Many of my works explore identity, resilience, hope and transformation. They aren't portraits of specific people. They are reflections of experiences we all share. The uncertainty before a decision. The weight we carry. The moments that shape us. The quiet strength it takes to keep moving forward.
I hope that when someone stands in front of one of my paintings, they don't simply see my story. I hope they recognise something of their own.
Every painting is an invitation. Not to admire the artwork, but to pause for a moment and reflect. To remember who you were, consider who you are today and imagine who you might still become.
As an artist, I don't believe every painting needs to provide answers. I think the best art asks better questions.
Living and working in South Africa has had a profound influence on my work. This country is full of contrasts, raw beauty, resilience, complexity and extraordinary people. Those qualities naturally find their way into my paintings. They remind me that light and darkness often exist side by side, and that some of the most meaningful stories emerge from that tension.
Every original work is painted by hand in oil on canvas. I embrace the unpredictability of the medium because it reflects life itself. The texture, imperfections and layers become part of the story. No two paintings are ever the same, just as no two journeys are.
If there is one thing I hope people take away from my work, it is this:
Art has the ability to slow us down.
In a world that constantly demands our attention, a painting can create a rare moment of stillness. A chance to feel, to reflect and perhaps to see ourselves a little differently.
If my work can do that for even one person, then I know I've painted something worthwhile.
