Bespoke work
Commissions
JAN takes on a limited number of bespoke commissions each year - original oil paintings built around your space, colour palette or the emotional theme you want the piece to carry.
How it works
Every commission starts with a conversation. Send an enquiry with a sense of the space the piece is for, any colours or themes you're drawn to, and your budget - JAN will reply personally to talk through scale, composition and price before any work begins. For a portrait, you'll send reference photos of the person.
Once you're aligned on the brief, a 50% deposit by bank transfer (EFT) secures your place and JAN starts painting. The balance is paid when the painting is finished, before it's collected or shipped. Because every commission is made to order, commissioned paintings can't be returned - which is why the brief, progress photos and the chance to ask for changes all come before sign-off.
Most commissions take four to eight weeks from a confirmed brief, depending on scale and studio workload, plus drying time before the painting can travel. JAN sends progress photos along the way, and there's room to ask for changes before the piece is finished and signed off.
When it's done, collect it from the studio in Pretoria or have it shipped to you, with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. For the full walkthrough, read How to Commission a Portrait Painting in South Africa.
