A Fragile Balance explores the uneasy space between control and vulnerability, using the human body as a powerful metaphor for the fears we carry about ourselves and what we may become.

At the centre of the painting, a man sits heavily on a chair that appears almost impossibly small beneath him. The chair becomes more than an object. It represents stability, control, and the structures we rely on to hold us up, even when the weight placed upon them begins to feel too great.

There is a quiet tension in the figure. His body dominates the canvas, while the chair beneath him seems fragile and temporary. The contrast creates a sense of uncertainty, asking how long something can remain balanced before it gives way.

Above him, a tiny bee introduces an unexpected moment of hope. Almost insignificant against the scale of the figure, it can be read as a symbol of luck, possibility, dreams, or the small things that keep us moving forward. At the same time, the bee carries its own sense of danger and fear, reinforcing the painting's central tension between hope and anxiety.

JAN uses expressive brushwork, vivid colour and fragmented marks to bring these opposing emotions together. The cool blue surroundings create an atmospheric sense of isolation, while flashes of red and yellow introduce energy, warning and possibility.

A Fragile Balance is ultimately about more than physical weight. It speaks to the fears we have about losing control, the expectations we place on ourselves, and the delicate space between where we are and where we fear we might end up.

The bee remains small, but impossible to ignore. Perhaps that is the point. Even when fear feels overwhelming, hope does not need to be large to matter.
